On the nose there is an intriguing mix of red plum aromas, alongside earth, crushed rose petal, soy and bay leaf notes. Rounded and rolling tannins take over on the palate, there is generosity and complexity without overindulgence, with woven flavours of red berry compote, green herbs, spice, pepper and shavings of dark chocolate making for a playful seriousness.

At the end of the old vine garden path at Dandelion Vineyards, there is a historic ‘Menagerie’ field blend of three grape varieties, adjoining blocks of Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro at Gomersal in the Barossa.

The McLaren Vale Wine Region experienced a drier than average growing season for the third year in a row, resulting in a 50% reduction in yields. The summer of Vintage 2020 was a tale of two summers. The “first” summer, the month of December, was the hottest on record.

After hand picking selected bunches in mid March, the grapes were left to whole bunch ferment together in open top fermenters with ambient yeasts. Hand plunging took place for 14 days, before basket pressing into old French Oak barriques. The wines then spent a further 12 months in the same oak, before bottling with minimal winemaking artifact, to capture the essence of the vineyards.
