Abruzzo is a wine region located on central-east Italy along the coastline of Adriatic sea. This hilly area has a long history and tradition of winemaking. Montepulciano is the main red grape in Abruzzo and the wines are called Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. Viticulture guidelines allow for use of pergolas, where the vines are grown upwards.

The soils in Abruzzo ranges from Mesozoic and Tertiary limestone in the Apennine peaks, to Pliocene and Pleistocene marine sediments as we get closer to the Adriatic sea. Dolomite, limestone, and marl characterise best the variety of soils in the region. The majority of vineyards are found in the hilly areas in the Chieti province. Sloping land, altitude, shallow and rocky soils are key elements of this great terroir.
